AuthorGreedo Where to watch:
Amazon Prime; the inner eye of a self-actualized, inter-dimensional elven being. Impression: I usually dislike Stephen King stories. This is how most of them play out: interesting characters get caught up in an interesting premise; halfway through the conflict, Stephen has no clue how to extricate these characters from conflict, so he hits the bizarro cycle on the dreamatorium, initating a new universe with laws that allow the story to end. In short, the logic of the beginning is not the logic of the end. In shorter: nonsense. I was going to hate watch this because Chris Walken was in it, then I see David Cronenberg's name slide by the opening credits. David Cronenberg's oeuvre consists almost entirely of bizarro worlds stuffed with opaque story lines and eccentric characters. If you had only seen A History of Violence, you would not be prepared for the usual tenor of a Cronenberg movie. If you then turned on Eastern Promises, you would be even more led astray as to the artistic sensibilities of the director. So, this should be a hissy fit in a car crash in a twister. Reaction: In 1981, Christopher Walken was the last person to see Natalie Wood alive. Two years later, he stars in a movie in which he has psychic visions about the fates of people he touches. There are no coincidences. So many things happen in this movie: a love lost; a tragic accident; a political assassination; a gazebo-related murder. I could go on. The herky jerky plot is regularly sublimated by Chris Walken's protagonist, Johnny, every time he reacts to a psychic vision as if being struck by a tiny lightning bolt. It is not until halfway through the movie that the ultimate antagonist, Martin Sheen, shows up and predicts his run on The West Wing nearly twenty years in the future. THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES! If all you wanted to know was, What is a dead zone? Well you'll have to wait even longer for ze German psychotherapist to reveal that bit of knowledge. There are some good shots scattered about and, outside of one creative murder-suicide, almost none of the body horror elements that Cronenberg is known for. Favorite Line/Scene: Scene: Outside Sarah: Johnny, they told me you were outside. Chris Walken: I am. Here's another one: Random killer: Gazeeeeebo. Ya' like that word? Other notables: Tom Skerritt sighting. Watch out all you tower buzzers. Conclusion: I love everything about this movie. Every line spoken is typically Chris Walken-y and he has this wild Max Shreck hair throughout. With that said, I can't really recommend this movie to anybody. It is really weird for one. It feels like a really well made TV movie. The plot meanders from one unconnected event to the next before settling on a rousing conclusion. Arbitrary rating: Check out this movie soon because THE ICE... IS GOING TO BREAK!
