AuthorGreedo Where to watch:
Amazon Prime; the back of a hearse on the way to an acquaintance's funeral Impression: I heard this is dark comedy. I remember seeing this as a kid and having nightmares from the opening suicide. In my memory, it happens in a closet. In the movie, it happens in a drawing room. Reaction: In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, King Arthur decides not to visit Camelot because it is a silly place. This movie is Camelot and it is safe to visit. Harold likes committing suicide. He does so every chance he gets. Maude is an older lady he meets while attending stranger's funerals. She steals cars and ignores the vast ocean that is the unspoken rules of etiquette. Maude has joie to vivre; Harold has joie de morir. The two make an unlikely pair. This movie is often referred to as a romance, but I don't condone necrophilia. Let's just call it quaint. Favorite Line: "Therapist: Do you commit these suicides primarily for your mother's benefit? Harold: I wouldn't say benefit." Other notables: Harold looks 15 but his voice sounds like he's on testosterone replacement therapy. You've been warned. Also, Tom Skerritt (two Rs, two Ts) makes a cameo and yells at Maverick for being a loose cannon. Conclusion: It's okay to meditate on death but don't forget to steal cars and make people feel uncomfortable. Arbitrary rating: A solemn 'B' for embracing death; two thumbs up for embracing life and the music of Cat Stevens.
