AuthorKuato Where to watch:
Netflix; a cramped space used as a hideout for bandits Impression: None to share Reaction: What happens when you corner thieves in a den? You get a DEN OF THIEVES, a heist-flick extraordinaire, aiming for a sense of realism that falls somewhere between HEAT and OCEAN’S ELEVEN. If you enjoy those movies and watching Gerard Butler constantly chew on things as spit trickles from his mouth while he screams obscenities - then this is for you. Butler’s arch-nemesis is played by Pablo Schreiber, cousin to Liev. Mark my words when I say he is the future. We’ll see more of Pablo because, frankly, he’s got the goods. Those goods were first witnessed in Michael Bay’s military-actioneer, 13 HOURS. It seemed as if the casting agents plucked a military expert out of a foxhole to play the role, but it’s just Pablo doing his thing. He brings layered pathos to the antagonist role in DEN that, perhaps, goes so far as to make the audience empathize with him. His performance will linger amidst your brainwaves for days. Favorite Line: Any unintelligible slurring of Gerard’s deeply buried Scottish accent Other notables: DEN has been building a cult following, and its box office was strong enough to warrant the sequel that’s currently in development: DEN OF THIEVES: PANTERA. Pantera!? Sign me up! Conclusion: DEN OF THIEVES builds to an extraordinary finale. If you’re halfway through and in question, give it the full watch it deserves.
